GymDawgs Start Season Strong Against Top-Ten Competition
January 11, 2020 | Gymnastics
Ann Arbor, Mich. β Washington started the 2020 gymnastics season strong in all four events against the University of Michigan and Texas Women's University. The GymDawgs got the season rolling right away, earning 195.350, falling just short of #7 Michigan who earned 195.650. Washington scored above 49.00 on vault and bars, while finishing above 48.00 on beam and floor.
"I am very proud of how the team started the season," said GymDawgs head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "They had a strong meet on all four events, even though, unfortunately the scores on beam were not a reflection on the team's actual performance. It's a frustrating factor in our sport that must change."
Evanni Roberson and Madison Copiak tied for highest score for the GymDawgs in the meet with 9.875 on vault and bars, respectively. These two events ended up being the best for Washington during the competition, with four GymDawgs earning 9.800 or higher.
"Amara jumped into our line ups at the last minute and made a huge impact," said Ray-Statz. "And Evanni had an amazing all around meet." The senior secured the individual all around title after finishing third or higher for the GymDawgs in each event.
Senior Allie Smith made her debut on vault for the GymDawgsΒ earning a 9.800 while sophomore Hannah Vandenkolk made her debut on beam, also earning a 9.800. "Hannah made her debut into the beam line up and was our highest scorer," said Ray-Statz. "There is so much to be proud of and the team is highly motivated to improve for Boise State and prove some people wrong."Β
