September 23, 2019 | Men's Golf
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Washington men's golf team picked up right where they left off after winning the Husky Invitational as they took a five-stroke lead following day one of the Old Town Club Collegiate on Monday. The Dawgs posted a 22-under 538 (272-266) to lead the field at the par-70 Old Town Club course, hosted by Wake Forest. Additionally, three Dawgs are in the top 10 heading into the final 18 holes.
"Our guys played great today," said head coach Alan Murray. "Henry was just phenomenal, especially in his second round going 7-under but everyone contributed, and we have some good momentum from our group. Playing Wake Forest on their home course isn't easy, but we've got one more round to go and our guys are very determined and focused to do well."
Senior Henry Lee led the pack as he posted a 10-under 130 (67-63) over the first 36 holes to tie for second. Lee recorded 10 birdies and during his first round, closed his last 12 holes at 4-under. He then opened round two with an eagle on the par five fourth hole followed by six birdies to finish his second round with an impressive 7-under 63. Over 36 holes, Lee recorded just two bogeys and was par or better on the other 34.
"Henry has had a lot of good finishes during his career but he hasn't yet won an individual tournament yet, so that's a goal for him and the way he is playing right now, you can see he is knocking on that door," added Murray. "He's a very hard worker and has great energy, so it's been good to see him during his senior season over these two events so far, playing the way that he is."
Just behind him on the leaderboard was junior Noah Woolsey who also knocked in an eagle on the fourth hole alongside eight other birdies to finish with back-to-back rounds of 4-under 66 and earn himself a fifth-place showing at 8-under 132 prior to Tuesday's final round. Woolsey was especially exceptional during his second 18 as he turned in a clean scorecard. Over 36 holes, the junior recorded just one error with his double on the par-4 hole 16 during his first round.
"To post a bogey-free round is very impressive and Noah did that during our second 18 today," said Murray. "He's playing great golf right now, which is exciting to see at the start of the season."
Junior Jan Schneider joined the sub-70 group as he posted two-straight 2-under 68's to finish tied for eighth at 4-under 136.After opening with a 3-under over his first 17 holes, Schneider recorded a blemish on his 18th to end round one. He then bounced back with six birdies over his final 18 to climb 15 spots up the leaderboard into his eighth-place tie.
Freshman Bo Peng, playing in his second event as a Husky, sits tied for 29th with his even-par 140 (71-69). The newcomer went 1-under over his last nine holes of the day to move up nine spots on the leaderboard.
Rounding out the lineup for the Dawgs was sophomore Paul Margolis who is tied for 60th at 5-over 145 (71-74). Freshman Petr Hruby, who is competing as an individual in this event, is tied for 44th after posting back-to-back rounds of 1-over 71 for a final scorecard of 2-over 142.
Washington finishes play at the Old Town Club Collegiate on Tuesday and will tee off at 6:10 a.m. PT alongside Wake Forest (-18, 542) and Louisville (-15, 545). Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com
