Miyamoto Wins Cougar Cup Title to Open 2019-20 Season

PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior Karen Miyamoto won her first collegiate tournament as she took home the 2019 Cougar Cup Title on Tuesday to help UW finish tied for third overall. The Huskies posted a 10-under 854 (287-286-281) at their season-opening event at Palouse Ridge Golf Course.
"We are so excited for Karen to get her first tournament win to start her senior season," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "She played steady all weekend and her 9-under score shows that. Overall, saw improvements in each round and that's what you want to see in the first tournament of the season."
Miyamoto's score of 9-under 207 was the second-best by a player in Cougar Cup history. She completed a stellar tournament with her best round of the 54-hole event, carding a 4-under 68. Tuesday's scorecard was also her best as a Husky and featured six birdies, making her birdie total for the tournament 13. Her three-day scores were 69-70-68 on the par-72 course.
Matching Miyamoto's final round total of 4-under 68, was junior Rino Sasaki who was able to climb 13 spots up the leaderboard during the final round to finish tied for 13th. She finished with a 2-under 214 thanks to rounds of 74-72-68. Tuesday's round for the junior featured six birdies as she improved upon her round two score by four strokes.
Freshman Brittany Kwon also made moves during the final 18 holes as she jumped six spots after carding her first sub-par round as a Husky. Kwon went 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish tied for 22nd at 1-over 217 (72-74-71). Sophomore Martha Lewis was just behind Kwon with a 2-over 218 (74-70-74) to tie for 27th.
Rounding out the UW lineup was senior Alice Duan who tied for 60th at 11-over 227 (72-79-77) alongside freshman Manhua Chen who went 74-76-77 for her 11-over 227 as an individual. Also competing as an individual was junior Wenyan Ma as she finished 83rd with a 19-over 235 (80-76-79).
Up next for the Huskies is the Molly Collegiate in Portland, Ore., Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
