SEATTLE --- Former Husky Raphael Cox is returning to Montlake this season as Head Coach Jamie Clark announced the addition of Cox to the coaching staff for the 2019 campaign.
ย
We are so happy to have Raphael back on campus," said Clark. "He was one of the all-time greats here at UW before going on to play professionally. To have him back to mentor our young players is incredible. I know players will immediately connect with Raph and will gain so much from him being on staff."
ย
"I'm excited for the opportunity to work with such knowledgeable staff and the elite talent they continue to recruit and develop," said Cox.
ย
Cox was a two-time All-Pac-12 selection at UW where he played from 2006-2009. After graduating, Cox was selected in the fourth round of the MLS SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake, where he was part of the MLS Cup Champion squad in 2009.
ย
Cox played with several NASL and USL teams from 2011-15 including winning an NASL Title with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2012. He has spent the last three seasons as a part of the Tacoma Stars of the MASL, scoring 29 goals in 48 career matches, and served as the Stars' youth program director.
ย
Cox formerly served as an assistant coach at Highline College, helping guide the Thunderbirds to an NWAC title in 2017. He also is the Washington State Elite Player Development Head Coach for G-07 and a Seattle United Youth Coach.
ย
Cox, who graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in sociology, has a younger brother Jamael who plays professional soccer for FC Tucson in USL League 1.
ย
Cox lives in Tacoma with his wife Rachel and son Maxwell.
ย
Washington opens the 2019 season on Friday, Aug. 30, hosting No. 18 Denver at 7:30 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
