MIRAMAR, Fla. – Husky freshman Alex Slenning captured gold today at the USATF U20 Track & Field Championships at the Ansin Sports Complex, winning the steeplechase to qualify for the Pan America U20 Championships. Slenning was one of four current Huskies in action today in Florida with two more recruits also competing.
Slenning, the UW Freshman Record-holder in the steeplechase, came in with the top time in the field with his 8:43.23 PR from West Prelims. The pace wouldn't be that quick today but when it mattered most at the end of the race, Slenning took control to win in 9:04.57, three seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Slenning makes Team USA for the Pan America Championships held July 19-21 in San Jose, Costa Rica. He is the first Husky to win a USA U20 title since Colby Gilbert won the 5,000-meters in 2014.
Freshman javelin thrower Zach Annanie increased his personal-best by a couple feet today as he finished fifth with a best throw of 203-9.
Freshman Makayla Kelby, who redshirted her first year at UW, threw 166-2 to finish fourth-place in the discus. She then came back and was seventh in the shot put at 47-1 3/4.
In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Cass Elliott advanced through to the finals with the third-fastest time of the day, as he ran 52.50. The final will be on Sunday at 2:14 p.m. Pacific.
Incoming Huskies Marlena Preigh and Daniel Maton, who just last weekend were racing in Seattle at the Brooks PR Invite, went cross country to run at Florida this weekend, both in the 800-meters. Preigh advanced to the final with the fourth-fastest time, running 2:06.31. Maton just missed the final by one spot, as he ran 1:52.85.
Preigh's final will be tomorrow at 2:21 p.m., directly following Elliott's hurdles final.
