Five-Run Fifth Helps Huskies Beat Stanford
May 09, 2019 | Softball
SEATTLE – A five-run fifth inning was more than enough for the #2 Washington Huskies, who locked down the Stanford Cardinal 5-2 behind a gem of a performance by Taran Alvelo. Alvelo earned her 23rd win, retiring the first 12 batters she faced. The Huskies are now 43-7 on the year and 18-4 in the Pac-12.
Alvelo was firing strikes all night, with first-pitch strikes to 15 of the first 16 batters she faced and eight strikeouts. She did not have a three-ball count the entire game.
The only runners to reach scoring position all game for Stanford would come on the two-run seventh inning homer. Only twice did Stanford manage multiple hits in an inning, with two singles in the fifth and three hits in the seventh.
Kaija Gibson reached base in all three of her plate appearances, with two singles and a walk. Morganne Flores also had two hits, hitting her first triple of the year. Madison Huskey had a single and a three-run home run that turned out to be the difference in the game.
The Huskies have two more games against Stanford left, set for tomorrow at 5:00 pm and Saturday at 12:00 pm.
