Huskies In Third After First Round of NCAA Regionals
May 06, 2019 | Women's Golf
CLE ELUM, Wash. --- The 19th ranked Washington women's golf team shot a 3-under round of 285 and is in third place after the first round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional on Monday at Tumble Creek Club. Sophomore Rino Sasaki carded a 4-under par round of 68 and is tied for third place after the first round.
The top six teams after three rounds of play will advance to the NCAA Championships at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. May 17-22.
"It was a good start," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "The conditions could not have been better. No wind out here in May is really unusual. We played steady, we didn't make many mistakes and the ones we did make, we really minimized. Being able to do that and pick up some birdies on the way made for a nice and easy day."
Sasaki rolled in six birdie putts in her opening round, while shooting 4-under in her final 10 holes. Sasaki was also 4-under on the par-4's, which lead the field. Sasaki is only two strokes off of the lead heading into the second round of play.
Senior Wenyung Keh shot a 1-under round of 71 on Monday and is tied for 15th place. Keh carded three birdies on her day and only two bogeys.
Senior Julianne Alvarez is tied for 26th after posting a 1-over round of 73. Alvarez started off her round with 15 straight pars and then finished with two bogeys and a birdie on her final three holes.
Senior Sarah Rhee also shot a 1-over round of 73 and is in a tie for 26th place. Rhee carded three birdies in her opening round.
Junior Alice Duan is tied for 38th place after posting a 2-over round of 74. Duan rolled in three straight birdie putts on holes 12-14.
The Huskies were able to take advantage of the par-5's on Monday, shooting 7-under as a team which lead the field. UW also recorded 59 pars, good for third best on the day.
USC leads the tournament at 7-under par, three strokes ahead of second place Northwestern. Ana Laura Collado of UCF is the individual leader at 6-under par.
The Huskies will tee off the second round on Tuesday, beginning at 10:20 a.m. playing alongside USC and Northwestern.
