Alvelo, Reynolds Honored By Pac-12 With Weekly Awards
May 06, 2019 | Softball
SEATTLE - After helping Washington to a sweep of the #4 Arizona Wildcats, Taran Alvelo and Sami Reynolds have each earned weekly awards from the Pac-12. Alvelo has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, her seventh career Pitcher of the Week award, while Reynolds has earned her first Player of the Week award.
Alvelo was near perfect in three appearances for the Huskies, going 2-0 with a save and a 0.57 ERA. Alvelo only allowed one earned run against Arizona, the second year in a row she has allowed only one run in three appearances against the Wildcats in Washington sweeps. The senior struckout 18 batters and walked only two, setting a new career high with her 244th strikeout of the year. Alvelo has now allowed only one earned run in her last 23.1 innings pitcher.
For Alvelo, this is her ninth weekly honor from the Pac-12 in her career, with seven Pitcher of the Week awards and two Freshman of the Week awards. Only two players in Washington history have earned more weekly awards from the Pac-12: Danielle Lawrie (18) and Jennifer Spediacci (nine).
Reynolds hit .400/.455/.500 against Arizona, raising her average against ranked opponents this year to .370. She had hits in every game and is now on a four-game hitting streak, the fourth hitting streak of at least four games in Reynolds' young career. Reynolds drove in four runs against Arizona and had her 11th double, giving her eight extra-base hits in her last ten games.
Reynolds is the first freshman to earn Pac-12 Player of the Week for the Huskies since Morgan Stuart in 2008 and just the fifth ever to do so. She is the third Husky freshman to win a weekly award from the Pac-12 this season, joining Madison Huskey and SilentRain Espinoza. Washington had never had multiple freshmen win weekly awards before this year.
