Clutch Defense From Dawgs Keys 3-1 Win
May 04, 2019 | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. – The #3 Washington Huskies clinched their sixth straight series victory with a 3-1 win over the #4 Arizona Wildcats. Taran Alvelo was on point all game, recording her 12th double-digit strikeout game of the year and second straight start with 10+ strikeouts.
Alvelo had an excellent start in the circle, with the only real blemish a solo home run in the second. The senior retired seven straight after that home run and twice retired the side in order in the game, including striking out the side in the sixth.
The only real trouble Alvelo faced came in the fifth inning, when Arizona put two runners on with one out. Alvelo forced an easy infield popup after that, then got a three-pitch strikeout to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, Alvelo dealt with two Arizona baserunners and no outs, stranding the two runners on first and second while recording her 11th strikeout.
Washington's early two-out hitting was crucial offensively as the Huskies went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk in the first three innings in two-out situations. The 7-8-9 hitters of Livy Schiele, SilentRain Espinoza, and Amirah Milloy all had hits for Washington.
The series finale of Washington-Arizona will be tomorrow at 12:00 PM PT.
