Huskies Finish 18th at NCAA Championships to Conclude Season
May 20, 2019 | Women's Golf
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 18th ranked University of Washington women's golf team's season came to an end on Monday as the Huskies finished 18th at the 2019 NCAA Championships. UW posted a 61-over 937 (311-311-315) during the weather-shortened 54-hole stroke play portion of the championship at the par-73 Blessings Golf Club.
This was the final event for seniors Julianne Alvarez, Wenyung Keh and Sarah Rhee. In their four-year career, the trio won the 2016 National Championship, made it to the NCAA Regionals all four years and advanced to the nationals three times while combining for 35 career top 10 finishes.
"This week just wasn't our week, but that doesn't take away from what this team has done this year," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "The seniors, the contributions they've made and what they accomplished winning a national championship is something not many people can do. We never really got better this week and I think Sunday was the day that hurt us the most because the conditions were good and we just put ourselves in a hole. It's frustrating when that happens when you know you're more than capable of doing more. The future is bright with what we have next year, especially with Alice and Rino getting this experience to carry with them forward to next season."
Alvarez matched her round two score on Monday to finish with a 14-over 233 (79-77-77) to tie for 61st. After making the turn at 5-over, the senior quickly responded going 1-under over the next nine holes to finish with a 4-over 77.
Sophomore Rino Sasaki made a huge improvement from round two as she went from an 11-over 84 to a 1-under 72 on Monday to climb 39 spots on the board int oa tie for 66th. It was the lowest round by a Husky at the event and the only one under par on the difficult Blessings course. She finished with a 15-over 234 (78-84-72). Sasaki opened the day with a 2-over before the turn but really shined on her back nine, going 3-under with consecutive birdies on holes six, seven and eight and no blemishes.
Just behind her on the scoreboard was senior Sarah Rhee who finished with a 16-over 235 (74-76-85), tying for 73rd. Junior Alice Duan posted a 23-over 242 (84-77-81) to tie for 105th while senior Wenyung Keh went 30-over 249 (80-81-88), rounding out the UW squad with her tie for 125th.
Washington's season featured two tournament titles and eight top five showings. Prior to the national championships, the Huskies had finished in the top five in four straight events.
The final round of stroke play was stopped late Monday night following weather delays and losing the light so the final position of UW's players on the leaderboard won't be official until all teams have concluded the round.
