Huskies in 17th Heading into Final Round of Stroke Play at NCAA Championships
May 19, 2019 | Women's Golf
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 18th ranked University of Washington women's golf team currently sits in 17th place following round two at the NCAA Championships on Sunday at Blessings Golf Club. The Dawgs carded a 19-over 311 to push their two-round score to 38-over 622 (311-311). Senior Sarah Rhee continues to lead the squad as she is tied for 19th.
"Today was just one of those days where everybody had a bad day on the same day," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "The conditions were perfect, the scores on average were four to four and a half shots lower per player, which just doesn't add up for us to shoot the same score today that we shot in round one. It's unfortunate but stuff like that happens, nothing we can do about it now and hopefully we can come back tomorrow and play with some pride and see if we can't post at least one good round."
Due to weather in the area on Saturday, the NCAA shortened the stroke play portion of the national championship as half the teams were unable to play. Sunday featured the conclusion of Saturday's morning wave and Saturday's afternoon wave's second round. All 24 teams will compete on Monday with the top eight advancing to the match play portion of the championship.
Rhee had UW's best round of the day with her 3-over 76 to move her overall score to 4-over 150 (74-76). The senior went three over through her first four holes but responded with a birdie on her sixth (hole 15) and added four pars to make the turn at 2-over. After three more blemishes, Rhee closed her round strong with two birdies over the final four holes, nearly making an eagle on her last of the day.
Senior Julianne Alvarez was one of two Dawgs to improve upon their round one score as she recorded a 4-over 77 to finish at 10-over 156 (79-77). Her round featured two birdies and just a handful of errors to leave her tied for 66th.
Joining her in a round two improvement was junior Alice Duan who went from an 11-over 84 in round one to a 4-over 77 in round two. She is now tied for 98th, which jumped her eight spots up the board, with a 15-over 161.
Also tied for 98th is senior Wenyung Keh who's 8-over 81 on Sunday also left her with a 15-over 161 (80-81). Rounding out the UW crew was sophomore Rino Sasaki who is tied for 105th with a 16-over 162 (78-84).
Washington will tee off at 6:06 a.m. PT from hole 10 alongside Virginia and UCLA.
