FAYETTEVILLE, Ark - The 18th ranked University of Washington women's golf team opened up the 2019 NCAA Championships at the challenging Blessings Golf Club with a 19-over 311 to put them in ninth following Friday's opening round. Senior Sarah Rhee led the Dawgs as she is tied for fifth with a 1-over 74.
"We learned this is a really hard golf course today," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "They have to play really smart and just stick with your spots. I think we tried to do a little too much and made some big numbers but we had 15 birdies so it is there for the taking. We also played the par 3's really well. We just need to clean up some thinking a little bit, not be so greedy and come back tomorrow and keep fighting."
The Huskies led the field in on the par-3's shooting just one-over on the day and their 15 birdies were second on the day. The University of Texas and Arkansas are tied for the overall team lead at 10-over 302. The top 15 teams following Sunday's round advance to Monday with the top eight then advancing to match play.
Rhee's round featured a team-best four birdies with three coming on her front nine allowing her to make the turn at 2-under. She recorded her third-straight birdie to start the back nine and went par on six of the remaining holes. Her two errors came on the par-4 12th as she recorded a triple and then the par-4 14 with a bogey. She is five strokes off the lead held by Arizona's Bianca Pagdanganan at 4-under 69.
"Sarah played unbelievable today, said Mulflur. "That 74 with a triple included was really impressive. It's good to see her do that because she's surely capable but this game can humble you in a second, so I was really excited to see her play that well."
Sophomore Rino Sasaki was next on the leaderboard for Washington as she closed her day with a 5-over 78 and is tied for 40th while senior Julianne Alvarez carded a 6-over 79 and is tied for 53rd.
Rounding out UW's day was senior Wenyung Keh who's 7-over 80 ties for 67th and junior Alice Duan is tied for 106 at 11-over 84.
The Huskies tee off for round two on Saturday at 9:55 a.m. from hole 10 alongside Virginia and Illinois.
