April 07, 2019 | Men's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. --- Arizona State was too tough an opponent for Washington to handle as the Huskies lost by a final of 4-0 in Tempe on Sunday.
The setback drops UW's overall record to 6-13, 1-3 in Pac-12 play. The victory for Arizona State improves its overall record to 11-10, including 3-2 in conference match-ups.
The contest began with Washington dropping two of the three doubles matches en route to Arizona State claiming the doubles point. After a loss by Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer at #2 doubles, Ewen Lumsden and Adam Torocsik evened things up with a 6-4 win in #3 doubles
The doubles point then came down to #1 where No. 52-ranked Jack Davis and Piers Foley matched up with No. 9-ranked Dominik Kellovsky and Nathan Ponwith. The match was close throughout wit with the UW duo battling back from a 5-4 and 6-5 deficit to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the Huskies were able to jump out to a 6-3 lead but could not find the clinching point as ASU would rally back with five-straight points to win 8-6 and get the doubles point.
The Huskies struggled in singles play, as the Sun Devils quick scored victories at #2 and #5, and despite putting up a solid fight at #1 Sommer took a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss.
Washington returns to action on Friday, traveling to Los Angeles to take on USC on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
