Wildcats Remain Hot, Complete Sweep Of Huskies In Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. Β βΒ Arizona continued its red-hot hitting ways to back an 11-strikeout performance by Andrew Nardi as the Wildcats beat Washington, 7-4, Sunday at Hi Corbett Field to complete a three-game series sweep.

The win improved the Wildcats to 16-14 on the season, 5-7 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies (14-12, 5-7) have now dropped seven-straight games.

The Huskies took their first lead of the series in the first inning, thanks to a heads-up effort from lead-off hitterΒ Kaiser Weiss. The sophomore centerfielder led off the game with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Weiss then took second on a pitch in the dirt and scored with two outs when Nardi (2-3) uncorked a pitch to the backstop.

The lead lasted until the second when Arizona's hot bats strung together three hits againstΒ Josh Burgmann, the last of which was a two-run double from No. 8 hitter Justin Wylie.

On a day where Burgmann did not have his best stuff, the Wildcats once again put together three-straight hits for two more runs and a 4-1 advantage in the third inning. They finally chased the UW redshirt-sophomore from the game in the fifth, where they would tack on two more runs.

Burgmann (3-2), who entered the day as the Pac-12 leader in strikeouts, added three more to raise his season total to 62, but he surrendered nine hits and was charged with six runs β five earned β in his shortest outing of the season β 4 1/3 innings.

The Huskies tried to scratch back into the game, scoring twice in the sixth inning, first on aΒ Ben BairdΒ RBI single and then on a bases-loaded walk toΒ Colton CassinelliΒ for the freshman's first career RBI, but reliever Avery Weems got Weiss to ground out with the bases-loaded and the tying run at first to get out of the threat.

Arizona got back one of the runs in their half of the sixth on an RBI single from Matthew Dyer, but red-hot hitting UW catcherΒ Nick KahleΒ tagged Weems for his second homer of the series, sixth overall on the season, in the seventh inning that brought it back to a three-run deficit, 7-4.

That would be the closest the Huskies could get as they would bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth but couldn't push anything across the board.

Stevie EmanuelsΒ pitched three innings of one-hit, scoreless relief to slow down the Wildcat hitters, but they still outhit UW, 11-6.

Baird was 2 for 4 with a RBI to pace the Huskies' offense.

Washington returns home and will face Cal Baptist on Monday, April 8 at Husky Ballpark. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
