April 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington men's tennis team defeated No. 35 Cal, 4-3, in a back and forth matchup Friday afternoon at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The win snapped a four-match losing streak and improved the Husky record to 7-15, 2-5 on the year.
The Golden Bears got off to a 1-0 lead as they took two out of the three doubles matchups. The senior duo of Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer fell 6-3 to Paul Barretto and Can Kaya in the first match of the day. Freshman Ewen Lumsden and freshman Adam Torocsik came back to win at No. 3 doubles, 6-3. Ultimately, the doubles point was decided on Court 1 as 32nd ranked Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi defeated senior Piers Foley and sophomore Jack Davis 7-5.
As singles play began, Lumsden made quick of his opponent, defeating Brumm 6-3, 6-1 to tie up the match at one.
Foley made it a 2-1 Washington lead as he beat Barretto in two sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Davis then extended the UW lead as he won 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) against Jack Molloy on Court 2, to make it a 3-1 Husky lead.
The three remaining matches would all turn out to be nail biting matchups, where both sides put up valiant efforts.
Cal started their comeback attempt as Bjorn Hoffmann took down Torocsik, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. With two matches remaining, the Huskies only needed one more victory to clinch the match.
Next, on Court 5, Ben Draper narrowly edged senior Sebastian Hawken, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). With Draper's win, the Golden Bears tied up the match at three. The match would be decided by the winner at No. 1 singles.
Sommer and Yuta Kikcuhi battled all match long, both rarely letting their opponent gain a small advantage. Kikuchi took the first set 6-4, but Sommer responded to win the second 6-4. Kikuchi, at one-point lead 4-2 in the third set but Sommer once again battled back to extend it to a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker resembled the match as neither side was able to take control. Ultimately, Sommer was able to come out victorious as he won the tiebreaker 9-7.
Although Washington has struggled away from home, the Huskies have been very difficult opposition to face on home soil as the Dawgs are now 7-2 in home matchups.
Washington will face a bigger challenge on senior day as the Huskies face #12 Stanford on April 21 at 12:00 p.m.
