Wilson’s Big Throw Highlights Final Day At Stanford
March 30, 2019 | Track & Field
STANFORD, Calif. – Jonah Wilson's picked up his breakout sophomore season right where he left off indoors, and built upon it in fact, as Wilson won the Stanford Invitational shot put title today with an impressive career-best toss of 64-feet, 7.25-inches. That moves Wilson all the way up to No. 3 in UW school history and should rank him in the top-10 nationally so far this outdoor season.
Wilson's indoor season came up just a couple spots short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, as he threw a best indoors of 63-4, but he showed today that the disappointment only added fuel to the fire, hitting another new PR by more than a foot on his fourth attempt, and winning the competition by more than a foot.
Wilson now trails only Steve Summers (65-11; 1979) and Ben Lindsey (65-4; 1998) on the Husky shot put top-10.
Washington wrapped up the Stanford Invitational with a number of strong marks in the field events along with some wins and PRs in the sprints.
After Tibebu Proctor ended Friday night's session with a victory in the 10k, the Husky men's 4x100-meter relay kicked Saturday off with another win. Jordan Lucas, Kemuel Santana, Evan Mafilas, and Khalil Winfrey got the stick around in 40.53 seconds.
Santana would come back to win his 200-meter dash heat in a big PR of 21.31 seconds with Winfrey also running 21.74.
The men's 4x400m relay also closed things out on the track with a strong season opening time of 3:10.86 from Santana, Mafilas, Jason Palmer, and Cass Elliott. The women's 4x400m relay of Carly Lester, Imani Apostol, Hannah Derby, and Darhian Mills opened up with a time of 3:43.30.
Along with Wilson's shot put mark, hammer throw school record-holder Onyie Chibuogwu got into the top-10 in another event, as she had a big 13-foot PR in the discus, winning the collegiate flight at 162-8 to go to No. 9 in school history. Redshirt freshman Ginny Mehl had a best toss of 157-5 to take fourth.
Emmy Engle opened her season just a foot off her PR in the javelin as she threw 145-1 and Mehl also threw the javelin, going 135-3. In the collegiate section of the women's hammer, Angel Nkwonta tossed 162-4 to finish seventh.
In the men's pole vault, Chase Smith upped his outdoor PR for the second straight meet, clearing 17-7 to get the victory and give UW a sweep of the titles following Olivia Gruver's record-setting win on Friday. Blaise Black and Zach Shugart were third and fourth with makes of 16-3 1/4.
Sophomore Jaylen Taylor was fourth in the triple jump invitational section, increasing his wind-legal PR to 49-5 1/2.
The 800-meters took place Saturday, with Derby leading the way for the women as she finished 11th overall with a time of 2:08.13. Kelly Makin ran 2:09.44, Allie Schadler went 2:10.71, and Nicole Goecke finished in 2:11.47.
Washington will now gear up to host Washington State next week in the annual UW-WSU Dual which has moved up much earlier in the season this year. The Huskies and Cougars will battle at Husky Outdoor Track next Saturday, April 6.
