Husky Signee Tanner Runs Historic 3:58 Mile
March 02, 2019 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - Samuel Tanner, one of Washington's incoming track recruits, made history on Saturday in his native New Zealand as he broke the National Record in the mile run, becoming the first New Zealand high schooler to go under four minutes with a time of 3:58.41. Tanner broke the record of 2008 and 2016 Olympic medalist Nick Willis, who congratulated Tanner on Twitter. Tanner ran the time in Whanganui, New Zealand.
Tanner becomes the first Husky commit ever to break four-minutes in high school. If Tanner were American, his time would rank him as the fourth-fastest U.S. prep in history, behind only Alan Webb, Jim Ryun, and Drew Hunter. It's a time that would also rank third in UW history and would have qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships this season.
Already this season, Tanner had already broken the U19 National Record for 1,500-meters as he ran 3:43.01.
Tanner is one of 12 recruits so far for the 2019-20 Husky class.
