Huskies Sign Smart From Down Under

SEATTLE – The Huskies have signed a new member of its 2019-20 recruiting class and their third international addition, as distance star Melany Smart will journey from Australia to Seattle this fall. Smart was the 2018 Australian U18 champion at 3,000-meters.
A native of Perth, Australia, Smart set a 5,000-meters personal-best earlier this month with a time of 16:08.30. She also owns personal-bests of 4:20.7 in the 1,500-meters, 4:42.61 in the mile, 9:12.71 in the 3,000-meters, and 2:08.94 at 800-meters.
Smart won the 2018 Australian U18 3k title in 9:20.07 and was the runner-up at 1500-meters in 4:22.18. She also was the Western Australia U18 champ in both distances that year.
She represented Australia at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth G![]()
?ames in the Bahamas, taking fifth in the 1,500-meters and placing sixth in the 3,000-meters.
Smart is the 12th member of Washington's 2019-20 class. She is third international recruit, joining Samuel Tanner from New Zealand and Ollie Thorner from England.
