Tarr Agrees to Extension Through 2025; New Softball Performance Center Announced
March 14, 2019 | Softball
SEATTLE – Washington Athletic Director Jen Cohen announced that head softball coach Heather Tarr has signed a seven-year contract extension through June 2025. In addition, Washington has announced they have received a private and anonymous gift to aid the UW in adding a Softball Performance Center, a best-in-class facility to enhance the day-to-day needs of the softball program.
"I'm grateful for the department's faith in me to continue to lead the program and I'm excited for the future of Husky Softball," said Tarr. "Additionally, the support for and commitment to the student-athletes that comes with facility enhancements like this really shows all the great things we can do for future Huskies."
Tarr is the winningest coach in University of Washington history in any sport, with 606 wins entering the 2019 season. No other active coach with fewer than 15 seasons as a head coach have won as many games as Tarr, whose .719 career winning percentage is 19th among active coaches.
Tarr has led the Huskies to six Women's College World Series appearances in her 14 seasons, including last year's second-place finish. In 2009, she led the Huskies to their first national championship. Washington has been ranked in the nation's top ten for 25 consecutive weeks and have been ranked in the nation's top 25 every week since 2008. Last season, Washington spent all year in the nation's top five and were ranked number one in the country for nine weeks.
"Coach Tarr has built Washington into a national power," said Cohen. "She continues to set the standard for excellence in college softball and I couldn't be more thrilled to extend her contract and have her here on Montlake leading one of the premier programs in the country."
Tarr has coached 24 All-Americans at Washington as well as 84 All-Pac-12 honorees. Four times the Huskies have won 50 or more games under Tarr's leadership, including each of the last two seasons.
In the classroom, Tarr's Huskies have earned 96 Pac-12 All-Academic awards. The team has maintained a GPA over 3.10 for six-consecutive years and put five players of the Dean's List last term.
The Softball Performance Center will be adjacent to Husky Softball Stadium, strategically tucked into the hillside of Husky Stadium. It will be designed to meet the hitting, pitching, and fielding needs of Washington's elite program. Design for the facility is underway with a target completion date of fall 2020.
"The way our softball student-athletes embody our core values is an inspiration to us all," said Cohen. "They are leaders on our campus, both on the field and off, as well as in the community."
