Gabbie Plain Earns Pac-12, NFCA National Pitcher Of The Week
March 12, 2019 | Softball
SEATTLE - After becoming the first Husky in school history to throw back-to-back no-hitters, Gabbie Plain has been named the Pitcher of the Week by the Pac-12 and the National Pitcher of the Week by the NFCA. This is the second time in Plain's young career she has been named the National Pitcher of the Week and the fourth time she has earned a Pac-12 weekly honor.
Over the course of three shutouts last week, Plain allowed just two hits and six total baserunners in her 21 innings of work. She struck out 37 batters, totaling ten or more strikeouts in all three games. That included a career-best 15-strikeout performance in her first no-hitter, against Northern Illinois, making her the sixth Husky ever (and second active Husky along with Taran Alvelo) to record a game with 15 or more strikeouts.
Plain's back-to-back no-hitters were unprecedented, making Plain one of eight Pac-12 pitchers since the turn of the century to record back-to-back no-hitters. Only two have done so in the last decade. In addition to being the first Husky ever with back-to-back no-hitters, Plain becomes the first Husky since Danielle Lawrie and the sixth ever with three or more no-hitters in their career. Plain also threw Washington's seventh perfect game last season, against Utah.
Both of Plain's no-hitters went the full seven innings, the first seven-inning no-hitters by a Husky since Lawrie in 2010. Only Lawrie, Caitlin Noble, Jennifer Spediacci, Jamie Graves, and Stephanie Burns have also thrown multiple seven-inning no-hitters in their Husky careers. Plain has allowed one hit in her last 17.1 innings and has allowed one run in her last 45.1 innings.
Washington opens Pac-12 play this weekend hosting #1 UCLA. Game one of that series in Friday, March 15 at 7:00 pm.
