PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The 19th-ranked University of Washington women's golf team earned a ninth-place finish in its first tournament of the spring campaign as it posted a 45-over 897 in very difficult conditions at Palos Verdes Golf Club at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The Huskies continued to improve upon their scores each day going 308-296-293 to help them climb three spots on the leaderboard during the final round.
"We competed better today, once again started strong just weren't able to carry it through the round but overall we played well against a really tough field that had 11 of the top 20 teams competing," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "It was really good to see Rino have the round she did today, especially since she was not feeling well at all and Julianne had a really nice week. It's good to be back out there playing and it was a good experience going against that level of competition this early in the spring season."
Washington was led by senior Julianne Alvarez who carded a tie for 16th with her 7-over 220 (75-72-73). Alvarez steady throughout the tournament and that play continued on Tuesday with her 2-over 73. Her round featured a strong start as she was 1-under with no blemishes through first 10 holes. She erred on four of her next five but closed strong with a birdie on her final hole of the day.
Sophomore Rino Sasaki made moves on Tuesday as she tallied her best round of the event shooting an even-par 71 to climb 10 spots on the board into a tie for 23rd at 9-over 222 (78-73-71). Sasaki's final round was the best by a Husky at the event as she carded three birdies to her three bogeys while going clean on the remaining 12 holes.
Finishing tied for 46th was junior Alice Duan at 14-over 227 (78-74-75) while junior Karen Miyamoto climbed 12 spots into a tie for 63rd. She also had her best round of the event on Tuesday finishing with a 3-over 74 en route to an overall score of 20-over 233 (77-82-74). Rounding out the UW crew was senior Sarah Rhee who placed 76th with a 24-over 237 (79-77-81).
Washington continues its spring slate at the All State Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, Louisiana, Feb. 17-19.
