UW in 15th After Rainy Day One at Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge
February 03, 2019 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The 19th ranked University of Washington women's golf team posted a 24-over 308 during round one of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in very rainy and difficult conditions at Palos Verdes Golf Club to open the spring campaign on Sunday. The Dawgs sit in 15th place in a field that includes 11 of the top 20 teams in the country. No team shot under par on Sunday and play was delayed due to the weather at the start of the round.
"It was a really tough day for us out there," said Mary Lou Mulflur. "The conditions were pretty brutal as you can see by everyone's scores. We made a couple of costly decisions but they hung in there and we have some things we can build on for the rest of the week. Julianne played smart, solid golf which wasn't the easiest thing to do but she was patient and that's what you needed out there in those conditions."
Alvarez is tied for 17th following the first 18 holes as she carded a 4-over 75. She opened the day with three blemishes over her first eight holes and rallied to go just one-over during the next 10 including a birdie on the par-3 15th hole. She is six strokes off the lead held by Agathe Laisne of Texas.
Junior Karen Miyamoto is next on the scoreboard for UW as she is tied for 41st with a 6-over 77. Her up and down round included three birdies over her final 11 holes after starting 5-over after her first seven. She birdied a par-3, par-4 and par-5 in that stretch to bring her back to 6-over. Junior Alice Duan and sophomore Rino Sasaki both tied for 54th after carding scores of 7-over 78 while senior Sarah Rhee is tied for 60th with an 8-over 79.
Washington continues play on Monday starting at 9:30 a.m. and will be paired with Florida State, Alabama and Arizona State.
