Huskies Finish Perfect Mary Nutter With 4-1 Win
February 24, 2019 | Softball
CATHEDRAL, Calif. – The #5 Washington Huskies finished out a perfect weekend, winning 4-1 against #23 Texas Tech to make it a 6-0 record at the Mary Nutter Classic. Madison Huskey and Taryn Atlee each drove in two runs for the Huskies. Washington is 14-1 on the season now and has won 13 consecutive games.
Taran Alvelo earned her 70th career complete game, striking out 12 while allowing one run on five hits. She had four 1-2-3 innings and struck out six consecutive batters at one point in the game.
Another big inning for the Huskies pushed the team toward victory, this time with Washington scoring three in the fourth to add to a 1-0 lead. Huskey had her second RBI in as many at-bats with a perfectly executed squeeze play. One batter later, Atlee brought two runs in with a double smoked over the head of the third baseman.
Sis Bates showed off her usual outstanding defense to end Texas Tech's attempted fifth-inning rally. With two runners on, the junior dove to make a stop in the hole, then managed to flip the ball from the ground to Atlee at second base in time for the inning-ending force out. Washington did not allow another threat from the Red Raiders en route to a win.
Washington will return to southern California next weekend for the Judi Garman Classic, beginning March 1.
