Plain One-Hits Fullerton In 1-0 Win
February 23, 2019 | Softball
CATHEDRAL, Calif. – Nawai Kaupe's solo homerun in the seventh was all the #5 Washington Huskies needed for a 1-0 win over the Cal State Fullerton Titans. Gabbie Plain shutdown the Titans from the get-go, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning and setting a new career high in strikeouts with 14. Plain would strike out five of the first seven batters she faced in the game. In total, only five Titans would reach base all day.
Taryn Atlee had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4. The junior doubled in her first two plate appearances, then added two more singles later in the game.
Fullerton's single dribbling through the hole on the right side to start the 6th was the first hit and only allowed by Plain. The Titans would put two runners on in the inning and strand them both as Plain and a strong Husky defense got three straight outs to end the threat. Kaupe's homerun to leadoff the next inning would be the game's only scoring.
The Mary Nutter Classic concludes for Washington tomorrow, with games against Northwestern at 9:00 AM and #23 Texas Tech at 11:30 AM.
