Four-Run First Carries Huskies To 6-3 Win
February 23, 2019 | Softball
CATHEDRAL, Calif. – The #5 Washington Huskies took the lead early and never looked back, defeating the Missouri Tigers 6-3. Kaija Gibson and Sami Reynolds each scored two runs in the game for Washington, which rode a four-run first to the victory. Nawai Kaupe drew three walks in the game and picked up an RBI as well.
Taran Alvelo worked the first 5.1 innings for the Huskies, striking out seven and earning the win. She would cede the circle to Gabbie Plain, who did not allow any runs over her 1.2 innings to lock up the victory.
Washington chased Missouri's starter after just two-thirds of an inning, scoring four runs in the first to jump in front. Another high-pressure inning, this time in the fifth, expanded the Husky lead to 6-1.
The Huskies faced a threat in the fifth as Missouri loaded the bases with just one out. Alvelo forced a shallow flyout to Kaupe in right before her sixth strikeout ending the inning with no damage done.
The Mary Nutter Classic concludes for Washington tomorrow, with games against Northwestern at 9:00 AM and #23 Texas Tech at 11:30 AM.
