NEW ORLEANS – The 18th ranked University of Washington women's golf team opened play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate on Sunday and currently sit in a tie for 12th after the first 18 holes of the three-day event. The Huskies carded a 12-over 300 during round one in very windy conditions that only saw two teams shoot under par on the day.
"The conditions on the course were tough today but I'm proud of our team for hanging in there despite the adversity," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "It was great to be outside on grass after not getting much time in Seattle due to the weather before we left, even though the day was very windy. We're excited to get back out there tomorrow and seeing what we are able to improve on."
Washington was led by sophomore Rino Sasaki who posted a 1-over 73 in the first round to sit tied for 18th. Sasaki had a little bit of an up and down day as she got to two over after her first five holes. She birdied the sixth and then went two over during the next 10. But the sophomore closed her round strong recording birdies on both the 17th and 18th to finish her back-nine at 1-under en route to her day one score of 73.
Junior transfer Alice Duan was just behind her on the leaderboard as she turned in a 3-over 75, tying for 33rd. Duan's day started quick with a birdie on the par-4, 362-yard hole one. She then sandwiched another birdie in between a pair of bogeys on holes four-through-six to close her front nine at even par. Duan added one more birdie on her back nine along with three blemishes to finish at 3-over.
One stroke back from Duan was senior Julianne Alvarez and freshman Martha Lewis who each posted a 4-over 76, which places them tied for 46th. After going 4-over on the front nine, Alvarez responded with a solid back nine going even par. Lewis's round was the opposite as she went closed her first nine at even par before a 4-over back nine gave her the final score of 76.
Rounding out the UW contingent was senior Wenyung Keh, competing in her first event of the spring season. Keh carded an 8-over 80 and is tied for 79th heading into Monday's second round.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate field features the top four teams in the nation along with 15 of the top 50 teams in the country. Washington will tee off at 7 a.m. PT at English Turn Golf & Country Club and will be paired with Auburn and LSU on Monday.
