November 04, 2019 | Women's Golf
KAILUA KONA, Hawaii – The University of Washington women's golf team carded an 8-over 300 during the first round of the Pac-12 Preview on Monday and currently is tied for ninth following 18 holes. The annual event, which is hosted by the University of Hawaii, resumes on Tuesday with round two beginning at 10:30 a.m. PT at Nanea Golf Club as Washington will be paired with California, WSU and Hawaii.
"Today we didn't take advantage of some really excellent conditions early in the round," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We managed to steady ourselves and played pretty solid after the first five or six holes but we are hoping to get off to a better start tomorrow."
The Dawgs were led by junior Rino Sasaki as she turned in a 3-under 70 to place her tied for fourth and just two strokes off the lead. Sasaki opened the day with a bogey on her second hole but responded with back-to-back birdies on her fourth and fifth, the par-3 17th and the par-5 18th. Despite one more error that brought her back to even par, Sasaki closed her day going 3-under over the final 11 holes.
Senior Alice Duan finished the day tied for 19th with her even-par 37. Starting off strong, Duan knocked in birdies on her first two holes then made par on the next three before adding another birdie on her sixth hole of the day. She recorded two errors over the next two par-4's but added one more birdie en route to finishing at even par. Duan also led the field in scoring on the course's par-5's as she went 3-under on the four par-5's.
Freshman Winnie Ng was next on the leaderboard for the Dawgs with her 5-over 78, which placed her tied for 47th while senior Karen Miyamoto is tied for 51st at 6-over 79. Rounding out the UW group was sophomore Martha Lewis as she is currently in 54th with her 7-over 80.
