SEATTLE - Washington takes its show back on the road this week, jetting off to Salt Lake City and Boulder to take on the 18th-ranked Utes and Buffaloes and wrapping up the first half of Pac-12 play. The ninth-ranked Huskies (15-3, 6-2 Pac-12) are currently tied for third in the conference, one game out of first, and have won five in a row, but the trip to the mountains is historically one of the most challenging for the Dawgs, who have won both matches of the trip just once in the last five tries, back in 2016.
Friday the Huskies face Utah with first serve at 6 p.m. and a national television broadcast on Pac-12 Networks. Sunday's match against Colorado starts at 12 noon Pacific time and will be live streamed via Colorado's website.
The Dawgs moved up one spot in the AVCA poll to No. 9 this week, one spot off their season-high. UW also remained at No. 6 in the NCAA RPI. Washington had two four set wins at home against the Arizona schools to complete a 4-0 homestand. Senior Shayne McPherson was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week this week after she posted 44 digs in the two wins. Kara Bajema had 40 combined kills last week and Samantha Drechsel had 36 to pace the offense.
Utah is coming off a very tough trip to the Bay Area where it lost back-to-back five setters at first-place Cal and Stanford, including a 17-15 loss at Stanford where Utah held a match point. The losses brought Utah to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in league play, with their other conference loss also coming in five sets at Oregon. Junior Dani Drews had 46 kills in the two matches last week and is one of the top scorers in the Pac-12 with 4.41 kills per set, hitting .243. Senior middle Berkeley Oblad posts 1.25 blocks per set, 2.50 kills per set, and hits .294, while junior Kenzie Koerber adds 3.01 kills per set hitting .268. Setter Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres averages 11.10 assists per set. Head Coach Beth Launiere was recently honored for 30 years leading the Utes. She assisted UW coach Keegan Cook on the USA World University Games Team this past summer.
Colorado has yet to win a match in the Pac-12 but proved how dangerous it is as the Buffs just lost a nailbiter, 16-14 in the fifth set, at 15th-ranked California in its most recent match. In non-conference play, Colorado joined the Huskies in Iowa and swept both the Hawkeyes and then-No. 5 Illinois the day after UW beat Illinois in five sets. As a team Colorado is hitting .236 for the season and giving up a .229 mark to opponents. Jusine Spann leads the Colorado attack with 4.02 kills per set and Parker Sterling adds 2.17 hitting .251. Jenna Ewert is averaging 9.57 assists per set and Rachel Whipple has 3.75 digs per set. Washington's last win at Colorado came in 2016 on its way to the Pac-12 title that season.
