SEATTLE - 10th-ranked Washington looks to keep the home cooking going this week as it meets the Arizona schools for the first time this season. The Huskies (13-3, 4-2 Pac-12) are 3-0 thus far inside Alaska Airlines Arena and this week marks the only time in the regular season that UW gets a second consecutive week at home. Arizona State (10-7, 2-4 Pac-12) is first up on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then Arizona (11-7, 1-5 Pac-12) visits this Sunday for a 12 noon match.
Friday's match will be live stream only on GoHuskies.com while Sunday will be televised nationally on Pac-12 Networks.
The Huskies are coming off a pair of wins at home last week that came in very different fashions. UW rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Oregon State on Friday but then went down 0-2 on Sunday against Oregon before rallying to win in five sets, the first 0-2 comeback of the season for the Dawgs.
Arizona State got wins over Arizona and Colorado but has lots its past three Pac-12 matches, all against top-20 opponents in Utah, Cal, and Stanford. For the season the Sun Devils are hitting .211 with opponents at .195. In their last match at Stanford, ASU hit very well, hitting .317, but the Cardinal hit .398 to win 3-0. Freshman outside hitter Iman Isanovic had 13 kills and hit .462 and junior OH Andrea Mitrovic hit .364 with 12 kills. Mitrovic averages 3.28 kills per set on the season and is hitting .271. ASU runs a 6-2 with Callie Jones and Noa Miller setting. Senior Courtney Leffel leads the defense with 4.75 digs per set. The teams split the season series last year, each winning on their home courts.
Arizona is 1-5 thus far in conference, getting a win over Colorado and going four sets in losses to then-No. 25 USC and then-No. 20 Utah. Arizona has a strong attack percentage for the season at .255 but in Pac-12 play that has dropped to .200. Still, the Wildcats have two of the most efficient attackers in conference play as junior Elizabeth Shelton leads the team with 3.00 kills per set and is hitting .330 just in conference, and senior middle Devyn Cross is hitting .412 in Pac-12 with 2.55 kills per set. Junior outside hitter Paige Whipple adds 2.50 kills per set in league play. Senior setter Julia Patterson averages 10.10 assists per set. Washington has won 15 straight in the series.
