UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Washington women's golf team posted a 5-over 581 (294-287) after two rounds of the season-opening Nittany Lion Invitational hosted by Penn State University Saturday. The Dawgs currently hold a four stroke first place lead over the host school heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
"We kind of got off to a slow start in the morning round but that I think was just that it was our first round of the year," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We didn't make that many birdies in the first round and then responded by almost doubling our output in second round which was good to see. I feel like our maturity really showed during a long tough day."
The Huskies were led by senior Sarah Rhee who is tied for sixth following day one with a 2-over 146 (73-73). She opened up round one going one under through her first 12 holes thanks to a birdie on the fifth hole. Following blemishes on the 13th and 16th she responded with another birdie to close out her first round at 1-over. After a bogey on her second hole of the second round, Rhee went clean over the next 16 to finish tied for sixth.
"I don't think Sarah could have scored any higher today," said Mulflur. "She hit the ball great but just couldn't get any putts to go in. Overall I was pleased with how she played today and am looking forward to seeing what she does tomorrow."
Rhee is joined in the six-way tie for sixth-place by junior newcomer Alice Duan who went 75-71 en route to a 2-over 146. She was one of six Huskies who bettered their round score over the second 18 on the day. Following a 3-over 75, Duan, who came to UW from Cal State Northridge, responded with a 1-under 71 thanks to four birdies which came on her final 10 holes.
"Alice got off to a tough start so it was nice to how her in the afternoon went," added Mulflur. "Then she birdied three of her last four holes which was really good to see that bounce back from her and tells us a little bit more about her."
Also posting a 2-over 146 was senior Julianne Alvarez, who is competing in this tournament as an individual and will not have a counting score towards UW's team total. She opened the day with a 4-over 76 during an up and down round but she bounced back quickly with a 2-under 70 during the second round thanks to three birdies and just one bogey.
Right behind the trio tied for sixth is sophomore Rino Sasaki who is in sole possession of 12th with her 3-over 147. Sasaki opened with 2-over 74 but bounced back with a 1-ver 73 during her second 18 holes of the day. Junior Karen Miyamoto and senior Wenyung Keh weren't far behind closing out the scoring for UW as they are both tied for 13th at 4-over 148. Miyamoto carded a 72-76 while Keh tied the Huskies' low round of the day with her 2-under 70 in the second round following a 6-over 78 during the first 18.
Two other Huskies also competed as individuals as freshman Martha Lewis is tied for 55th at 11-over 155 (78-77) while sophomore Wenyan Ma is tied for 62nd at 13-over 157 (81-76).
The final round tees off at 7 a.m. PT on Sunday and UW will be paired with Penn State and Rutgers.
