SEATTLE - Pac-12 play arrives with a bang this week as the 13th-ranked Huskies open up against 22nd-ranked Washington State in the first installment of the Boeing Apple Cup Series. Thursday night's rivalry showdown will begin at 8 p.m. and be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks. Washington (8-2) will then have a trip down to Corvallis to face Oregon State on Sunday, Sept. 23, to cap the first of 10 weeks of Pac-12 competition.
The Huskies finished nonconference play with four straight wins, taking the title at the Boise State Classic last week. The meeting with the Cougars (9-1) will be UW's fifth match against a top-25 team this season, with the Dawgs going 2-2 in their prior matches. The Huskies remained 13th in the AVCA poll this week, one of seven Pac-12 teams currently ranked, with Oregon State just outside the top-25 in the "also receving votes" category.
Washington has seen increased roles for essentially every player on its roster through the first four weeks of the season. True freshmen Ella May Powell and Shannon Crenshaw have made major contributions, with Marin Grote also appearing in seven sets so far. Another new face, sophomore transfer Samantha Drechsel is second on the team with 2.85 kills per set, and sophomores Maria Bogomolova and Emma Calle have also scored their first career points.
After four weeks of action, the Huskies are hitting .234 for the year while their opponents are hitting .201. A strong week of serving in Boise moved the Dawgs to the top spot in the Pac-12 in aces per set at 1.81. Washington is middle of the pack in blocks with 2.38 per set, ranking seventh in the league. Individually, junior Kara Bajema is ninth with 3.67 kills per set. Freshman Ella May Powell is seventh with 10.36 assists per set. Senior Destiny Julye is third in the Pac-12 with 0.48 aces per set and Samantha Drechsel is eighth at 0.35, while Shayne McPherson ranks sixth with 4.08 digs per set.
The Cougars are 9-1 having won their first nine matches before losing their last match in five sets to East Tennessee State. They had two straight wins over then-No. 17 Northern Iowa to highlight their preseason. WSU ranks near the top of the Pac-12 stats in most categories through nonconference play. The Cougars are second with a .286 attack percentage and first with an opponent mark of .147. WSU is third in blocks per set at 2.77 and fourth in aces at 1.59. An experience squad that made NCAAs last year, the Cougars have five seniors playing nearly every set. Senior Taylor Mims is fifth in the league with 3.97 kills per set and setter Ashley Brown is fifth at 10.57 assists per set. Middle Jocelyn Urias is fourth with a .387 attack percentage while libero Alexis Dirige is seventh with 4.06 digs per set. Opposite Claire ranks seventh with 1.24 blocks per set and middle Ella Lajos is fourth with 1.30. The Huskies won both meetings with WSU last year, with the Cougars last win coming in Seattle in 2016.
Oregon State has a 9-2 record and has won its past four including a 3-2 win over then-No. 23 San Diego, which UW also beat twice to start the year. OSU's only losses were in four sets at Kansas State and in five sets vs. Ole Miss. The Beavers' .187 attack percentage ranks last in the Pac-12 but they are holding opponents to .156, which is third-best in the league. That is partly thansk to a big blocking average of 3.11 per set which ranks second in the Pac-12. Freshman setter Maddie Sheehan is ninth with 9.18 assists per set and freshman Lindsey Schell is third in blocks at 1.35. Sophomore libero Grace Massey leads the Pac-12 with 4.84 digs per set thus far. Oregon State snapped a long 27-match losing streak to the Huskies last year, winning both meetings in five sets.
