Duan Shoots 3-under 68 in Round One at 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur

KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. -- Incoming University of Washington transfer Alice Duan started off the 2018 U.S. Women's Amateur with a stellar round, carding a 3-under 68 to tie for ninth following the tournament's first 18 holes of stroke play on Monday. The event, which runs from Aug. 6-12, is taking place at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs.
Duan went through the front nine blemish free and posted three birdies over her first four holes to make the turn at 3-under 33.
"Yeah, it was a good start for me today," said Duan. "I was able to hit a lot of good shots and had a couple of opportunities so I thought I did pretty well on the front nine."
She stayed at even par over the first four holes of the back nine and then birdied the par-3 14th hole to put her at 4-under. Unfortunately, Duan followed that with a bogey on the par-4 15th but was able to close out making par over the last three holes to finish at 3-under 68 for the day.
"I think our pace on the back nine kind of changed a little bit," added Duan. "I guess we kind of had some timing issues so I was trying to hurry but other than that, it was a good round and it's a really nice course.
Duan will tee off at 10:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday, Aug. 7 and will be looking to clinch one of the 64 spots for match play.
"I know tomorrow will be the same thing, not much is going to change, I just kind of need to not try to force anything because I know the course is tough," said Duan. "I just need to take my opportunities where I can and be patient otherwise."
The 156-player field is playing on the par-71, 6365 yard course and all but 35 competitors, who entered with exempt entries, qualified for a spot during sectional events at 23 sites around the country. Stroke play continues on Tuesday with 18 holes which will then be followed by a match play round of 64. The remainder of the tournament will be in the match-play format. The event will be televised on Fox Sports 1 and 2 from Aug. 8-12. Check your local listings.
