Huskies Roll Past Maryland 2-0 in 1,000th Game
August 24, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Scott Menzies and Kyle Coffee scored goals withing seven minutes of each other in the first half to propel No. 24 Washington to a big 2-0 victory over NCAA perennial power Maryland on Friday night in front of 1,354 fans at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Joey Parish picked up the assists on both goals while Saif Kerawala was strong in goal, making three big second-half saves to earn the cleansheet. Despite starting the season just outside the Top 25 in the preseason Coaches' poll, Maryland is a traditional power, winning three NCAA Titles and reaching the NCAA quarterfinals in 13 of the last 15 years.
"We have such a hard schedule on the road to begin, getting this home win was absolutely crucial," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "On the east coast, Maryland is the toughest out there is: they never quit, they fight, they compete. They have really good players, so to beat them in our opener required a pretty complete performance."
The Huskies (1-0-0) opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as Parish carried the ball through the middle of the the Terrapins' (0-1-0) defense and blasted a shot toward the net from about 25 yards out. Maryland netminder Dayne St. Clair made a great diving save, but pushed the ball right to the feet of Menzies, who sent it into the empty net with ease.
In the 38th minute, Washington added a big insurance goal with Parish again leading the way. The redshirt junior made a great run down the left side, working his way almost all the way to the end line before sending a low cross into the box. Coffee worked his way into that space and one-touched the ball into the open net.
Washington had a few more chances in the first half, but went to the break with the two-goal lead. In the second half, Maryland turned up its offensive pressure, peppering the Husky goal with 10 shots to just two by UW. But Kerawala was up to the task, making great saves and coming off his line to shut down other Terrapin chances.
One of his biggest saves came in the 60th minute as Maryland sent a corner kick right into the middle of the box where Donovan Pines headed it to the left post. However, Kerawala made an incredible diving stop, pushing the ball out of danger.
He made another great save in the 79th minute, as another header went toward the far corner. However, he made a quick dive to his right, catching the ball and helping to secure the victory.
Parish's two assists matched his entire total during the 2017 season to go along with three goals.
"Joey is fantastic. Up until yesterday he was supposed to play up front, but we made a last minute arrangement," said Clark. "He has the most utility on the field. Wherever we play him, he finds a way to impact the game. Which is so cool to know that we can play him anywhere."
Washington improves 48-5-4 in home openers all time having now won seven-straight dating back to 2012, and have gone 26-2-2 in home openers dating back to 1998. Overall, the Huskies are now 39-13-5 in season-opening matches and are 7-1-0 in such matches under Clark.
The match was the 1,000th in the program's history with the Huskies now holding a 626-263-111 overall record as it starts its 57th season as a varsity program. The match was also its 391st all-time shutout with the team now amassing 2,240 goals all-time.
Washington hits the road for a big three-game road trip. The Huskies start the trip against the University of New Mexico on Monday in a 6:00 p.m. match before heading north to face the University of Denver on Thursday.
"We've got two games at altitude against two really good teams," said Clark. "We had a lot of faith in these guys when we made this schedule and we made the schedule to push them. I believe they will rise up to every challenge. That doesn't mean we will win every game, but we will be a lot better for it in the long run.."
