Huskies Blank New Mexico, 2-0
August 27, 2018 | Men's Soccer
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- For the second time in two matches, Scott Menzies and Kyle Coffee tallied goals for Washington en route to a 2-0 victory, this time downing the University of New Mexico in the Huskies' first road game of the year Monday night at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque.
Β
Washington moves to 2-0-0 to open the season, posting back-to-back shutouts to start the year for the third time in eight seasons under Head Coach Jamie Clark after blanking Maryland 2-0 on Friday. The Lobos, who blew out #22 Seattle University 4-2 on Friday night, drop to 1-1-0 on the year.
Β
Junior Jaret Townsend wreaked havoc on the New Mexico defense, creating numerous scoring chances and recording assists on both Washington goals. Menzies added an assist on the Coffee goal to finish the match with three points.
Β
After a scoreless first half, the Huskies got on the board early in the second. After a long cross sailed through the box, Townsend gathered it on the near side of and slipped a quick pass through to Coffee. He turned with space in front of him, drew the keeper out just a bit, then snapped a quick shot over the keeper's shoulder into the far corner from less than 10 yards on the near side to make it 1-0.
Β
In the 72nd minute, Washington added a big insurance goal thanks to great work on the counter attack. Jaret TownsendΒ got the play started by knocking away the ball from a New Mexico attacker on the Lobos' attack. Corban Anderson gathered the loose ball and sent a nice pass ahead to Parish streaking down the near side. He slowed up just before the box and threaded a pass between three defenders to Townsend, who passed it right to Coffee, then quickly over to Menzies who was charging in. The senior slid the ball under a diving defender and past the keeper to but the Huskies up by two.
Β
The Huskies were in control through much of the match until the Lobos pressed late in the match. Washington held a 10-9 edge in shots, but New Mexico failed to put a shot on goal in the match to UW's six.
Β
UW goalkeeperΒ Saif Kerawala was rarely testedβpushing a cross over the bar in the 80th minute and intercepting a pair of crosses lateβon the way to his second shutout of the season.
Β
Washington had the match's first quality scoring chance in the eighth minute as Scott Menzies gathered a loose ball in the box, turned and fired a shot past the keeper but off the far post. The Lobos responded eight minutes later with a pair of hard blasts in the box both of which were blocked by Husky defenders.
Β
In the 38th minute the Huskies had another great chance. Menzies won the ball from between three defenders at the top of the box and poked it ahead to Parish. The redshirt junior gathered it quickly and fired past the keeper but was whistled for being just offside.
Β
Tonight's match was the 200th coached by Clark in his 11 seasons as a head coach including eight at Washington. Overall, he is 128-50-22 in three stops with an 89-35-19 mark at UW.
