Huskies In WCWS Championship Series For Fourth Time After 3-0 Win

OKLAHOMA CITY – The #5 Washington Huskies advanced to the Women's College World Series championship series for the fourth time in program history with a 3-0 shutout win of the #4 Oklahoma Sooners. Washington kept its perfect postseason alive, pushing its winning streak to 11 games, including eight in the postseason. Taran Alvelo threw her 11th shutout while Julia DePonte homered to help the Huskies to their 52nd win.
Alvelo started the game with a 1-2-3 first inning and got stronger from there, allowing only seven baserunners stretched out over seven innings. Only twice in the game did multiple Sooners reach base in the same inning and never did one advance to third base. Alvelo allowed only one extra-base hit, the first extra-base hit allowed by UW in the WCWS and fourth of the postseason.
The Huskies scored early, picking up a first-inning run for the 27th time this season. Sis Bates would come around to score what would be the game's winning run after reaching on a bunt single and stealing second. DePonte brought her home with an infield hit, singling to the shortstop to make it 1-0.
Oklahoma managed back-to-back singles to start the second inning. The baserunners were stranded, however, as Alvelo retired the next three batters of that inning, including striking out two.
Noelle Hee pushed another run across the plate in the third as the Huskies widened their lead to two. Taylor Van Zee and DePonte each singled to set up the rally, with Van Zee waltzing across the plate when Hee bounced a single into rightfield.
DePonte's 15th home run of the season, coming in the fifth inning, made it 3-0. DePonte ripped a 2-2 pitch into the stands in rightfield for the round-tripper.
Alvelo would end the game with a 1-2-3 sixth and, after allowing a single to start the seventh, retired the next three batters easily for the win.

Notes
- Washington has made the WCWS championship series four times now. The Huskies also did so in 1996, 1999, and 2009.
- The Huskies have four shutouts in eight postseason games.
- Washington has only twice had multiple WCWS shutouts in a season before today: 1999 and 2009.
- Bates (1x2, R) has the 15th season by a Husky with 75+ hits. She is the 12th player to do so.
- DePonte (3x3, R, HR, 2 RBI) is the ninth Husky to have a season with 15 or more home runs.
- DePonte has homered in the WCWS each of the last two years.
- Hee (1x2, RBI, BB) has a four-game hitting streak, hitting .455 in that time.
