TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Washington's second round at the 2018 NCAA Tallahassee Regionals was highlighted by junior Sarah Rhee who moved into a tie for second following another stellar round giving her a two-day total of 9-under 135 (67-68). The Huskies as a team moved one spot down on the leaderboard after the day's 1-over 289 and currently sit in second overall at 14-under 562 (273-289).
"Honestly, I didn't really know what to expect today, I certainly didn't expect Wenyung [Keh] to shoot a 63 again," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "It's hard to follow up a really good round, you see that all the time. After a slow start though, she definitely started hitting the ball a lot better on the back side. I was really proud of how Karen played today and for her to shoot a 1-under was huge for us. We'll be in the last group again tomorrow so that's always fun to be right in the thick of it. Overall, I thought their decision making was just as good today, we just didn't have the same shots fall. Tomorrow we just have to go out, stick to our routines and the process and we'll be alright."
Coming off of a career-best round of 5-under 67 on Monday, Rhee's play didn't skip a beat as she carded a 4-under 68 on Tuesday for her total of 9-under 135. Picking right up where she left off, the junior opened the day with back-to-back birdies. After a bogey on the third brought her back to one-under Rhee would play clean until the 8th where she birdied the par-3 160-yard pin.
Following birdies on two of her first three holes after the turn, Rhee was at 4-under. After just her second blemish of the tournament on the 14th, she closed the day with a beautiful long put on the 18th to give her her 11th birdie of the tournament and move her one spot up on the leaderboard into the second-place tie. With her 67 and 68 rounds, it marked the first time in Rhee's career she has posted back-to-back sub-70 scores.
Rhee was one of two Huskies that will enter the final round in the top 10 as junior Wenyung Keh is tied for ninth with a 4-under 140 (63-77). Keh, coming off her record-setting round on Monday, had a shaky start to round two bogeying five of her first nine holes. On her back nine, Keh turned it around though and went even par with a birdie and a bogey on back to back holes en route to her 5-over 77 for the day.
Junior Julianne Alvarez is tied for 25th after posting a 1-over 73 in round two to move her to a two-day score of 1-under 143 (70-73). After opening the day with a birdie-bogey combination, Alvarez would go on to birdie the 8th and move her to 1-under par. She stayed there through the next nine holes before a pair of errors on the par-4 18th led to a double bogey giving her the 1-over 73.
Rounding out the scoring unit for UW was sophomore Karen Miyamoto as her improvement between day one and day two was the best by any Husky. Miyamoto went from her score not counting on Monday to climbing 28 spots with a 1-under 71 round, the second best by a Dawg on Tuesday. The sophomore earned three birdies during her round and made par on 13 holes with just the two blemishes on the day. She is now tied for 48th entering Wednesday's final 18.
Freshman Rino Sasaki also had a shaky start to the day and found herself at four-over after just three holes. She quickly responded though and went just two-over during the next 15 holes en route to a 6-over 78 giving her a two-day total of 7-over 151 (73-78), tying for 60th.
The Huskies will tee off for their final 18 holes at 6:50 a.m. PT on Wednesday and will be paired with Alabama and Florida State.
