DePonte Homers Twice As Huskies Win Game One 6-1 Over Oregon State
May 04, 2018 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The #5 Washington Huskies scored early and never looked back, defeating the Oregon State Beavers 6-1. Julia DePonte had two home runs in the game, her second multi-homer game of her career, while Gabbie Plain struck out 11 in a complete-game win. Noelle Hee drove in two runs in the game as well. Washington improves to 42-8 on the season with the victory.
Plain had her third double-digit strikeout game of the season, earning her 14th win. The freshman allowed only one run in the game, on a double in the third, ending the game with seven consecutive batters retired.
After Oregon State got the leadoff batter out, seven consecutive Huskies reached base, with Washington batting around in a three-run first. Sis Bates and DePonte scored the first two runs of the game after they both moved into scoring position on a double steal. Emma Helm brought Bates in with a grounder, then DePonte and Kirstyn Thomas made it 3-0 on a single up the middle by Hee.
DePonte's first home run came in the second inning, extending the lead to 4-0. She would also home in the sixth, also scoring Taylor Van Zee, who had drawn one of her two walks earlier in the inning.
Oregon State threatened in the second, putting two runners on via single and walk after Plain struck out the leadoff batter. Plain would set down the next two batters with ease, striking out the side to strand both runners.
Plain's streak of seven in a row retired ended the game definitively, getting Washington the win.
