Washington Heads To Oklahoma On 13th World Series Trip
May 27, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - For the 13th time in program history and second year in a row, the #5 Washington Huskies head to Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series. Washington will face off with the #4 Oklahoma Sooners to start its pursuit of a second national title, playing the Sooners on Thursday at 11:30 am PT.
The Huskies defeated #12 Alabama in Super Regionals to continue their perfect postseason and enter the World Series on a eight-game win streak. Taylor Van Zee put the Huskies ahead in each game against Alabama, hitting a walkoff single in the first game before stroking a home run to right-center in the first at-bat of game two. Gabbie Plain extended her win streak to seven games with a 9.0-inning performance in game one. Taran Alvelo matched that with her tenth shutout of the year in game two, striking out eight.
Washington is 49-8 on the year entering this week, needing just one win for its tenth 50-win season and second in a row. It would be the third time in program history the Huskies have strung together 50-win seasons and second time in Heather Tarr's tenure as head coach. Washington is also guaranteed to have its fourth-fewest losses ever in a single season: the Huskies have lost only nine games in a season four times and have never lost only eight.
Washington is one of four Pac-12 teams in the Women's College World Series, along with Oregon, UCLA, and Arizona State. The Huskies share a side of the double-elimination bracket with Oregon and Arizona State, as well as Thursday opponent Oklahoma. Florida, Florida State, and Georgia make up the other side of the bracket.
Last season, the Huskies went 1-1 against Oklahoma. Alvelo shutout the Sooners at the College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico early in the year. The Huskies then fell 3-1 in the World Series to Oklahoma. These two teams have faced off each of the last four years now, with the series in that time tied 2-2 entering this week's game.
