SEATTLE - The third annual Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships are at hand and the Huskies are once again aiming to put together their best volleyball at the conference tourney. Washington has earned several upsets over the first two years of the Pac-12 Championships and will look to out-do its seeding once again this year, but the Pac-12 is clearly the deepest it has ever been so a deep run will be no easy task.
Stanford plays host to the championships for the first time. The tournament begins this Thursday, Apr. 26, and concludes on Saturday, Apr. 28. This year there will be no pairs championship, and the schedule for the team tourney is thus spaced out over three days instead of just two.
The Pac-12 Networks will provide coverage of every match, televised live either on the Pac-12 Network national channel, or on Pac-12 Bay Area, or streamed live online at Pac-12.com/live
The Huskies are seeded sixth out of the nine conference teams. UCLA, the top-ranked team in the country based on the AVCA poll, is the No. 1 seed. The defending champions from USC are seeded second. 12th-ranked California is seeded third, 13th-ranked Stanford is seeded fourth, and 14th-ranked Arizona is seeded sixth. The Huskies are the first team "also receiving votes" in the AVCA poll, ostensibly meaning they are ranked 21st. Arizona State is seeded seventh, Utah is No. 8, and Oregon is No. 9.
Washington will open up against California on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. The winner of that will face the winner of USC and Arizona State on Friday. The tournament is a double-elimination format.
- The Huskies and California split two meetings this season. California won the first dual, 5-0, at the Pac-12 South Invitational, and the Huskies won the most recent match, 3-2, at the Pac-12 North Invitational in Seattle.
- Washington was seeded seventh in the first two Pac-12 Championships, and finished fourth in 2016 and third last year.
- The Huskies are 12-11 on the year. The 23 matches is a program-high as is the 12 victories.
- Senior Carly DeHoog and sophomore Shayne McPherson lead the team with 16 victories, a UW single season record for dual wins.
- Senior Courtney Schwan has taken over the top spot in Husky career beach winsย with 45 career wins.
- In 2017, Schwan and Destiny Julye were named to the Pac-12 All-Championship Team.
- Washington has defeated every Pac-12 beach volleyball team at least one time except for UCLA and USC.
