Huskies Finish Strong SoCal Weekend With More PRs
April 21, 2018 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES – The best week of the outdoor season thus far for the Husky track squad wrapped up with many more big efforts at the Beach Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays. Hanna Tarleton was part of two new marks for the top-10 lists, as she moved up to No. 6 on the 400-meter hurdles list and helped the women's 4x400m relay run the No. 9 time in school history.
Tarleton was one of just a handful of sprinters finishing things up for the Huskies at the Mt. SAC Relays today. The senior transfer won her heat of the invitational 400-meters and took six tenths of a second off her lifetime-best in a time of 58.24 seconds. That jumped her from ninth to sixth on the record lists and should get her into the top-15 in the West Region. In the same heat, junior Carly Lester had a time of 59.40 just a few tenths off her PR and sophomore Darhian Mills had a time of 1:03.10.
The Husky women's 4x400m relay ran an outdoor season-best time of 3:40.04, taking the No. 9 spot in school history. The men's 4x400m relay also had an outdoor season-best of 3:11.48 to finish things up at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Beach Invitational
Sophomore Khalil Winfrey got the Huskies off to a fast start back at Long Beach State today as he posted a new wind-legal PR of 10.56 seconds in the 100-meter dash. That's just .06 seconds away from the Husky top-10 list. Jordan Lucas, who ran a 10.68 PR yesterday, went 10.80 today, and Christian Young had a wind-legal PR of 11.01, into a -0.9 headwind.
The next big highlight came from Connor Morello, who doubled back from running a 1,500-meters yesterday but pulled away from the pack of his 800-meter heat to win going away in a new career-best of 1:49.97, second fastest overall. Both Morello and Devan Kirk (1:48.88 on Friday) went under 1:50 in the 800m for the first time this weekend. Today, Kirk dropped down to the 400-meters and won his heat in a time of 49.03 seconds.
In the women's 100m hurdles, Morganne Hill followed up her 14.11 collegiate-best yesterday with a 14.15 time today. Freshman Hannah Rusnak won her heat in 14.32 seconds, her first time running the hurdles this season. Sophomore Oscar Herrera ran a season-best 55.29 in the 400m hurdles.
Annika Dayton and Zach Shugart both had big makes in the pole vault to likely secure their spots at NCAA West Prelims. Dayton made a new career-best of 13-3 ½ while Shugart tied his career-best of 17-0 ¾. Tori Franzen and Monica Cohen both cleared 11-9 ¾ today while Blaise Black cleared 16-0 ¾.
In the high jump, Mayson Douglass matched her season-best with a make of 5-5. In the triple jump, freshman Jaylen Taylor went 47-3 ½.
Top throws today came from Jose Padilla in the discus, as he threw 172-feet even, and Jonah Wilson who went 166-feet even. Wilson also threw 53-4 ½ in the shot put.
Next up for the Dawgs is the annual Dual Meet against Washington State. That will take the Huskies to Pullman next Saturday, Apr. 28.
