DePonte's Home Run Keys 3-1 Win Over #23 Cal
April 15, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – After a two-day delay, the #1 Washington Huskies took down the #23 California Golden Bears 3-0 in game one of the series. The Huskies scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking the win thanks in part to Julia DePonte's two-run homer. Washington is now 40-2 on the year, its fourth 40-win season in the last five years.
Taran Alvelo earned her 21st win in the game, getting her 19th complete game stretched over three days. Alvelo recorded eight strikeouts, putting her over 200 for the second season in a row. After the delay, Alvelo retired the first nine batters she faced and 13 total in a row in the game before allowing two baserunners in the seventh.
Washington threatened all day Friday, putting up four hits in the game's first three innings but not scoring as the game went into a delay tied 0-0.
Kirstyn Thomas put the first run on the board, breaking the tie with an RBI groundout in the fifth. Kelly Burdick came around to score on the play, making it 1-0.
DePonte put the game firmly out of reach with her two-run shot, her team-leading 12th of the season. DePonte blasted a high flyball off the middle of the leftfield foul pole for a 3-0 lead.
Cal's only run would come on a fielder's choice in the seventh. Alvelo recovered well, striking out the last batter of the game looking for the win.
