On 10-Game Win Streak, Huskies Host #23 Cal
April 10, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - The #1 Washington Huskies wrap up a two-week homestand this weekend, looking to extend their winning streak against the #23 California Golden Bears. Washington is on a nine-game winning streak in Pac-12 play, its longest since 1996, and now stands alone in first place in the conference. Game one of the series is set for Friday, April 13 at 7:00 pm. Tickets for all home games are available online.
The Huskies have swept three straight Pac-12 opponents, taking down #9 Arizona, Stanford, and Utah. One more win would give Washington its third Pac-12 win streak of ten or more games in program history: Washington won 17 conference games in a row in 1996 and ten in a row in 1995. The sweep of Utah also gave Washington its fifth season with three or more Pac-12 series sweeps. 1996 is the only season the Huskies have swept more than three Pac-12 opponents, recording five sweeps.
Against Utah, Washington allowed just five total baserunners in the series, led by Gabbie Plain's perfect game. Plain threw just the seventh perfect game in UW history and second by a freshman, joining Danielle Lawrie, Jamie Graves, and Nancy Wagner as the only Huskies to have thrown perfect games. The Australian was named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Week for her dominance, her second Freshman of the Week award this year. Plain joins Taran Alvelo in 2016 as the only Huskies to ever win multiple Freshman of the Week awards.
AlveloΒ was also excellent in the circle this last weekend, earning her 19th and 20th wins of the season. Alvelo is one of eight pitchers in UW history now with multiple 20 win seasons in their career after winning 35 last year. Plain was the third pitcher in the nation to win 20 games and is the only one that has yet to lose multiple games.
Cal enters this Pac-12 series after their bye week. Cal played Pacific and Saint Mary's during that bye week, shutting out both opponents in 5-0 and 13-0 wins. The Golden Bears are 1-8 in the Pac-12 this year but have lost three conference games in extra innings already. The one Pac-12 win for Cal came against Oregon State on the road.
Washington swept Cal last year and have won the season series nine times in Heather Tarr's 13 years. Since 2000, Washington holds a slight series lead at 28-26.
