UW Beats Cal For First Time Since 2005
April 13, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – For the first time since 2005, Washington women's tennis defeated No. 45 California 5-2 on Friday in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"I'm excited to get that win," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "It's been a long time since we beat Cal. We know what we are up against right now. We know we have to win some matches right now to make the tournament, and they showed up today and showed how bad they want."
The Huskies (14-9, 4-4 Pac-12) beat the Bears (10-7, 5-3 Pac-12) for the first time since the Huskies pulled off a 4-3 win back in 2005. The win was clinched for Washington by Stacey Fung when the score was 4-1. Both Fung and Vanessa Wong picked up singles wins over ranked opponents and Wong teamed up with Miki Kobayashi to win their doubles set against a ranked duo.
In doubles, No. 26 Kobayashi and Wong teamed up to get the 6-2 win on court one. After Cal took the 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, it was up to No. 3 doubles to determine who would win the doubles point. Fung and Katarina Kopcalic were down 3-0 on court five before storming back, winning six games in a row to win 6-3 and clinch the doubles point.
The Dawgs set the tone early for singles, starting strong on most courts. No. 63 Wong was particularly strong early on, winning her first set in a 6-0 sweep over No. 38 Olivia Hauger. The second set was closer, but Wong still came out on top, 6-4.
Cal won its first point of the match on court five, Kenadi Hance falling in two, 6-2, 6-2. Alexis Prokopuik responded by finishing her match. After a tight first-set win, 6-4, she swept the second set 6-0 for the win.
No. 22 Fung clinched the match for Washington with her two-set win. Both sets were close, with Fung taking the first over No. 40 Julia Rosenquist 6-4. The second set needed an extra game to decide the winner, but Fung came out on top, 7-5.
The two remaining matches were in their third set and were played out. Kobayashi won her first set, but lost the following two to drop the match, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Similar to her teammate, Kopcalic won her first set as well before falling in the second. However, she came through in the third to take the match.
The Huskies play their second match of the weekend against No. 22 Stanford on Saturday at noon in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Links for live scoring and streaming can be found on the women's tennis schedule page.
