
Close Match Ends in 4-2 Loss Against No. 22 Stanford

SEATTLE – Despite battling hard and forcing three matches to a third set, Washington women's tennis fell 4-2 to No. 22 Stanford in the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies are now 14-10 (4-5 Pac-12) following this loss. In their series history with the Cardinal (14-3, 8-0 Pac-12), the Dawgs have never come out victorious. Stanford holds firm onto first place in the Pac-12 after its win today.
The Cardinal took the doubles point after winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The Huskies battled close to start doubles, keeping it tight in the beginning on courts one and five. However, Stanford's dominant 6-2 win at No. 2 gave the visitors the momentum. The Dawgs dropped the set at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, losing the doubles point.
Miki Kobayashi took charge right from the start of her singles match against No. 84 Caroline Lampl. She cruised to a 6-1 first-set win at No. 3 singles. In the second set, she kept up the strong play to win by the same 6-1 score and to take the match.
The Cardinal picked up singles wins on courts four and five. Alexis Prokopuik fought No. 42 Emily Arbuthnott at No. 4 singles, but the Cardinal came away with the win, 6-2, 6-4. Kenadi Hance fought tough and kept her match close toward the end, but she ended up losing by the same scores, 6-2, 6-4.
Vanessa Wong struggled in the first set at No. 2 singles, losing 6-2, but she battled back against No. 65 Melissa Lord in the second. Wong had the 4-2 lead before Lord tied it up. The two traded games to get to 5-5 when Wong won two in a row to take the second set 7-5 and force a third. Wong was up 5-1 in the third and allowed her foe to come back within one, 5-4. However, Wong finished strong, taking the third set 6-4 and winning the match.
At No. 6 singles, Katarina Kopcalic and her opponent traded leads in the beginning of the first set before the sophomore pulled ahead to take it 6-3. The second set went in favor of Stanford, Kopcalic falling 6-3 to move to a third set. She got down early in the third set, facing a 4-1 deficit. She kept the games close, but she was unable to come back, falling 6-1 and allowing Stanford to clinch the match.
On court one, Stacey Fung battled with No. 15 Michaela Gordon. The first set needed a tiebreaker to determine a winner. Fung fell in a close 7-5 tiebreaker but came back strong in the second set, winning 6-1 to force a third. The third set did not finish as the match was clinched on court six.
The final home match and regular season match will be next Saturday against Washington State.
