Strong Team Performance Leads to Sweep of Utah
April 01, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – Behind a strong, all-around team performance, No. 49 Washington women's tennis picked up its second sweep of the week, beating Utah 4-0 on Sunday in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"I thought today was a really good day for us," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "We came out really well in doubles. I think we are starting to find our rhythm. In singles, we are starting to play better tennis. We are competing the right way. I told the team that I want us to be playing our best tennis in April and May, and I think we are gearing toward that."
From the start Washington set the tone. The Dawgs won the doubles point, picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong dominated, leading from start to finish. They won their set, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Stacey Fung and Katarina Kopcalic were neck and neck with the Utes in the beginning but pulled away to win 6-3.
In singles, Wong played a quick match, cruising in both sets to win 6-1, 6-1. Katarina Kopcalic was not far behind on court six, taking charge in her match as well, 6-1, 6-0. Their wins put the Dawgs in a good position, up 3-0 over the Utes.
At No. 1 singles, Fung handled Alexis Petrovic from Utah to clinch the match for Washington. Fung started slow, keeping it close to start the first set. But she pulled away to win, 6-3, then she swept the second set, 6-0.
The Dawgs were in good position to win on all three other courts when the match was clinched. Kobayashi lost the first set on court three, 6-4, but she then swept the second set to force a third.
Washington is back on the road next week, traveling to Arizona to take on the University of Arizona and Arizona State.
