COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior Chase Smith returned to the NCAA Indoor Championships for a second time today, placing tenth nationally in the pole vault to earn All-America Second Team status. Smith made the first two heights at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium but the field was extremely strong and deep today, as nine vaulters cleared 18-feet, a height that won the title two years ago when former Husky Jax Thoirs took the title.
Smith, the only vaulter from the MPSF or Pac-12 in the field, made the opening height of 17-4 ½ on his second attempt, and then had a first-attempt make of 17-8 ½ to move up to sixth-place at the time. But he missed his three tries at 18-0 ½, just a half inch below his career-best of 18-1. Smith moves up one spot from 2017 when he tied for 11th at NCAA Indoors.
On Saturday, the indoor season concludes for the Huskies with Colby Gilbert in the men's 3,000-meters at 4:10 p.m. Pacific time and Amy-Eloise Neale in the women's 3k at 4:25.
