Huskies Wrap Up Work In Stanford And Texas
March 31, 2018 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – Washington wrapped up competition at the Stanford Invitational and the Texas Relays today with a number of season-bests and several impressive freshman performances.
The Dawgs got some strong marks in the field, led by a new top-10 mark in the women's javelin from junior Daisey Newman, who competed just three times last year but on her first throw today she tossed a PR of 147-11 to move to ninth in school history. That was over 20 feet farther than Newman's best a year ago.
Freshman Jonah Wilson took third in the shot put competition with a best of 55-2 on his sixth and final attempt.
Another rookie, Devan Kirk, turned in his fastest 800-meter time of his career, posting a 1:50.77.
Down in Texas, freshman Iman Brown was the only Husky to race at the Texas Relays today, and she made the most of it, turning in a fast 200-meter time that will certainly qualify her for NCAA West Prelims. Brown was second in her invitational heat in 23.43 seconds, with a hefty +4.0 tailwind or else it would have been the No. 2 time in school history outdoors.
Back at Stanford, Gina Flint improved her season-best in the discus to 158-5 to take eighth in the invitational section. Emmy Engle went 135-7 in the javelin and Katherine Taylor threw 133-4.
The men's pole vault took place today with Blaise Black and Taylor Barnes both clearing 16-2 ¾. Jacob Bowler and Zach Shugart both made 15-9 as well.
Freshman Jaylen Taylor was fourth in the triple jump at 47-1 ¾
Nate Beamer and Nick Laccinole both doubled back from running 1,500-meters yesterday to race an 800m today, with Beamer running 1:53.42 and Laccinole 1:53.58.
Next week will be the first full team competition for the Huskies as they travel to Hayward Field to compete in the Pepsi Team Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 7, against Oregon, Washington State, and BYU.
