Dawgs Suffer Heartbreaker in 4-3 Loss at USC
March 24, 2018 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – In a tightly contested match throughout singles and doubles, No. 47 Washington women's tennis fell in a close 4-3 loss to No. 41 USC on the road Saturday afternoon.
The match came down to court one, with No. 16 Stacey Fung taking on the Trojan's No. 57 Gabby Smith. Fung won the first set, but Smith came back to dominate the second and force a third. All other singles matches were done as the third set began, the team win on the line at No. 1 singles. The final set was a battle all throughout. Fung sustained an injury partway through the set but continued to fight until the end. It took extra games to determine the winner. However, Smith came away with the 7-5 win in the end.
Washington (10-7, 0-2 Pac-12) won the doubles point over USC (9-5, 2-2 Pac-12) after taking the sets on courts one and two. The fate of the point rested in the hands of Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong at No. 1 doubles when the other two sets split. It took a tiebreaker to decide the winner, but the Huskies pulled out the 7-6(3) win.
In singles, No. 62 Wong got UW off to a solid start by cruising to a two-set win, 6-3, 6-0, putting her team up 2-0 over USC early. However, the Trojans responded by winning three singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. They won the matches at No. 3, 4 and 6 singles, all in two sets.
Kenadi Hance came up big for the Dawgs at No. 5 singles. She won her match in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, tying the team score at 3-3. It was all up to the match on court one to decide the winner. Fung won the first, 6-4, but then her opponent cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set. The third set was tightly contested with the Trojans coming up with the 7-5 win.
