After Impressive Regular Season, GymDawgs Head To Pac-12s
March 22, 2018 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – After finishing the season with a best-ever national ranking of eighth, the Washington GymDawgs head to Tucson, Arizona for the Pac-12 Championships this Saturday. The third seed, Washington will compete in session two, beginning at 6:00 pm, along with UCLA, Utah, and Cal. The GymDawgs will start on floor.
The GymDawgs went over 197 as a team four times in the regular season this year, tying a school record reached in 2003 and 2004. Washington went 197 or higher in four of the last six competitions entering Pac-12s, finishing the regular season with a score of 196.950 against Boise State and BYU. The GymDawgs are in the top ten in the nation on beam and floor, finishing seventh in each with averages of 49.177 and 49.248, respectively. They are also 15th on bars with an average score of 49.116.
Seven different GymDawgs have won at least one individual event title this year, led by Hailey Burleson's 16. That total was the most individual event wins in over a decade for a Husky and the second time in Burleson's career she has won ten or more event titles in a single season: she also won 14 last season. Burleson finished the season with vault and floor titles against Boise State and BYU, tying a season high on floor with her score of 9.925.
Evanni Roberson won six event titles for the GymDawgs in her first year of competition, having not competed as a freshman due to injury. Roberson won four beam titles on the year, putting up scores of 9.900 or higher in that event in each of the last five meets. The sophomore put up scores of 9.875 or higher in every event this year and also picked up a vault and a floor event title as well.
Monica Riley would end the regular season with four bars titles. Her 9.950 performance on bars against UC Davis and SPU was the highest score on bars by a GymDawg this season and best since Kaitlyn Duranczyk's score of 9.950 at the NCAA Regionals last season. The last GymDawg to have a higher score than that was in 2004, when Emily Pritchard earned a perfect 10. Riley had a score over 9.800 in every meet she competed in except one and had five performances earning a score of 9.900 or higher.
Malory Rose and Maya Washington each had two event titles. Rose twice won beam with scores of 9.900 against Arizona State and Southern Utah, while Washington won floor in each of those meets with scores of 9.900 as well. Kristyn Hoffa won a vault title against UC Davis and Seattle Pacific, while Madison Copiak finished the year with a vault event title against Boise State and BYU.
Last season, the GymDawgs finished third at the Pac-12 Championships with a score of 197.100. It was the second-highest team score at the Pac-12s ever, behind 2001's score of 197.475. That third-place finish was tied for Washington's highest finish ever at the Pac-12s, a feat last accomplished in 2011. Washington's last individual conference championship came in 2014, when Aliza Vaccher won the vault championship with a score of 9.950.
The Pac-12 Championships will be shown live on the Pac-12 Network.
