Washington Wins Two on Saturday
March 17, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE β No. 41 Washington women's tennis won its two matches on Saturday, taking down Idaho 5-2 and sweeping Seattle 7-0.
Β
"It was good overall," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "It was good to be home and get two good wins and have our first outdoor match. We got some momentum going into Pac-12 play next weekend. We came out a little bit flat against Idaho in doubles. But in singles I thought they did a really good job. I thought we competed well and played really well as a team. Against Seattle, we made some changes and I thought they did a really good job making positive adjustments."
Β
Match One: Idaho
The Vandals (4-5, 3-0 Big Sky) came out strong in doubles against the Huskies (10-6, 0-1 Pac-12), winning at No. 2 and 3 to take the doubles point. The No. 29 duo Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong won handily on court one, taking it 6-2. However, the other two courts struggled. Stacey Fung and Alexis Prokopuik fell 6-2 after tying it at 2-2 and dropping the next four games in a row. At No. 3 doubles, Kenadi Hance and Angela Li had good rallies, keeping it close, but their Idaho opponents pulled away to win 6-4.
Β
In singles, the Dawgs found their groove. Washington won five of the six singles points, taking the matches in two sets. The one match that Idaho won on court six also only went to two sets.
Β
No. 56 Wong dominated her match. She swept her opponent in both sets, 6-0, 6-0, finishing her match before most first sets were done. Hance and Kobayashi also handled their matches with ease. At No. 5 singles, Hance won 6-2, 6-1, while Kobayashi cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win on court three.
Β
Prokopuik clinched the match for the Huskies on court four. Her first set was the closest of the day, but she still won 6-4. In the second set, the two were tied at 3-3 before Prokopuik won three-straight games to win 6-3 and take the match.
Β
At No. 1 singles, No. 14 Fung was the last to finish. Her battle with No. 39 Marianna Petrei was another two-set win for the Dawgs. Fung took it 6-2, 6-2.
